The Unsung Hero Dialogues - Promoting Solidarity and Diversity yhrough Awareness and Policy Reform

Time: 2020 - 2021

The project aims to contribute to capacity building of European third sector organizations. Over a two-year period, a wide range of data will be collected from many European non-profit organizations on their working conditions. Based on the results analyzed, recommendations are made and submitted to both national governments and international organizations. Local and international information days will be organized during the project. The project involves organizations from Germany, Italy, Estonia, Greece, Romania and Portugal and is funded by the EU's "Europe for Citizens" program. The lead partner of the project is the organization CULTURE GOES EUROPE (CGE) - SOZIOKULTURELLE INITIATIVE ERFURT E. More information about the project can be found on the Facebook account.

Development of compulsory school social science subject (Civics)

Time: 2019

Jaan Tõnisson Institute has been involved in the development and advancement of the social science (Civics) subject in Estonia since the restoration of independence. By now, the need for cardinal alteration of this compulsory subjest at Esonian schools has become evident. During 2019, the Civic Education Center analyzed current practices in the implementation of the curriculum of social science (Civics) in the National Curriculum and, in cooperation with Estonian and foreign partners, developed recommendations for teachers enabling modernization of subject teaching.

 Supporting the economic development of Georgian rural areas

Time: 2018 - 2019

The objective of the ongoing project is to decrease the socioeconomic disparities between Georgian regions and to increase their welfare. In order to achieve the objective, the touristic potential of Mountainous Ajaria, Javakheti and Kakhetia will be enhanced through developing region-specific / cross-region tourism products and routes (including in specific branches of tourism) and through increasing the capacity and capability of tourism entrepreneurs in the regions.

The project is financed by Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the funds of development cooperation and humanitarian aid.

 

Curriculum Reform for Promoting Civic Education and Democratic Principles in Israel and in Georgia (CURE)

Year: 2016-2020

 JTI Civic Education Centre participates in four-years lasting (2016 – 2020) Erasmus+ project “Curriculum Reform for Promoting Civic Education and Democratic Principles in Israel and in Georgia” (CURE). CURE is a multi-faceted program for curricular reform that aims to improve the level of curriculum for Civic Education and Principles of Democracy in teacher-training programs in Israel and in  Georgia through: developing new courses, faculty training workshops, student leadership training, student activities, establishing Civic education clubs/centers at CURE's Israeli and Georgian universities and colleges and in schools where students practice teach.

STEPS - Survival toolkit for EDC in Postfactual Societies

Year: 2017 - 2019

ERASMUS+ mobility project STEPS brought together 15 partner organisations from different European countries for 2-years cooperation. Partners discussed the essence and demands of so-called Postfactual Society, developed EDC (Education for Democratic Citizenship) Kit promoting knowledge and skills for living in the new reality and providing traing-of-trainers for disseminating the outcomes of the project. The launch of the project took place in June 2017 in Berlin. The following meetings of the partners were held in Spain and Greece.

Overview of the history of Jaan Tõnisson Institute

Time: 2018

In 2018, Jaan Tõnisson Institute assembled its current history book. The book was issued on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jaan Tõnisson whose name the institute bears. The 256-page book provides an overview of the activities of the oldest non-profit-making organization in Estonia that was established on April 17, 1991, until the summer of 2018. The book contains illustrations, documents, data tables.

Shaping and debating the future of EU

Year: 2015-2016

Area: The main aim of the project was to initiate a discussion and debate in four European countries (Estonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Latvia) about the future of the European Union. The project countries were chosen to be 2 "new" member states of the EU (Estonia and Malta/Latvia), 1 recently joined member state of the EU (Croatia) and one EU membership candidate country (Bosnia and Herzegovina), representing also different regions of Europe. Project activities started in most of the countries in the spring of 2015 and continued until the year 2016. 

The activities took place in each country on a national level, but also on local / regional level. In each location debates involved different stakeholder groups (policy makers, civil servants – but focusing on those groups who will be directly affected by the EU sectoral policies: youth, entrepreneurs, socially disadvantaged etc).

Supporting EU integration process in Georgian Kvemo-Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions and in the Autonomous Republic of Ajaria

Year: 2014-2015
Area: The aim of the project is to increase awareness about European Union, EU integration process and role of EU in Georgia among the Georgian ethnic minorities of Azeri and Armenians as well as the inhabitants of the Republic of Ajaria. The improved awareness will help to increase civic participation in policy development and decision making processes. This improvement is crucial bearing in mind the tendencies prevalent in Georgia home and foreign policy development. The project empowers the inhabitants of Kvemo-Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti regions and the Republic of Ajaria to participate in the home and foreign affairs of Geogia, in social, political, economic and cultural life – thus helping to ensure their equal opportunities in realizing their civil, political, economic and social rights.

Supporting the capacity of agricultural producers in Samtskhe-Javakheti region and developing producer co-operatives
Time: August 2014
Area: The aim of the project is to reduce rural poverty and increase the agricultural and economic capability of the farmers in the rural areas of Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Georgia.

Improvement of environmental education in Senegal 

Year: 2014-2015
Area: The objective of the project is increased knowledge in environmental and environmental protection issues among the population in Dakar, capital of Senegal.

“Through Youth Cooperation Towards More Sustainable Societies”

Year: 2014
Area: The aim of the project financed by the Estonia – Latvia Programme is to indeepen the cooperation between the youth of the neighbouring countries Estonia and Latvia via common research and development work on the environmental issues of raising awareness about the sustainability.

European Commission TEMPUS Programme project “DOIT – Development of an International Model for Curricular Reform in Multicultural Education and Cultural Diversity Training”.
Year: 2012 – 2015
Area: DOIT enhances the quality of education in participating Israeli and Georgian Higher Educational Institutions by designing, piloting and implementing curricular reform which promotes multicultural education and cultural diversity training and by facilitating the exchange and sharing of knowledge among professionals involved in education.

Grundtvig Lifelong Learning Programme project „Becoming a Change Agent for Rural Citizenship – a Qualification Programme for Rural Areas in Europe“.

Area: The aim of the project is to contribute to an educated society in rural areas of Europe by designing a European course concept that can be applied in different political contexts and cultural backgrounds for raising civic engagement and political participation and by training change agents fostering active citizenship in rural areas.

European Commission project „Evening with Ombudsman – Empowering rural communities through knowledge on fundamental rights“.
Year: 2012 – 2014
Area: The aim of the project is to raise the awareness of EU citizens living in rural/remote areas about their fundamental rights as declared in the Charter of fundamental rights of the European Union and enhance their understanding of the possibilities for addressing the violations of their rights.

Helping to integrate the Armenian minority into Georgian society
Year: 2012 – 2013
Area: The objective of the project is the increased participation of the Armenian minority in Georgian civic society as well as policy and decision making process. The project aims at creating the capacity among the Armenian minority to form civic society organisations (NGOs) as well as to conduct negotiations with regional and national powers and to influence respective policies.
